Bespoke staircases in Blackwood
We take a fair volume of Cut String Staircases work across Blackwood, and almost none of it repeats. Local property is overwhelmingly valleys terraces, Victorian maritime villas and civic Portland stone frontages, which is why we never quote from a catalogue. With very high rainfall with strong Atlantic and Bristol Channel exposure in the mix, prolonged wetting decay and finish failure on valley-facing elevations is a question of when rather than whether. What you are paying for is the cut string profile, where any inaccuracy shows immediately.
We check on site before committing anything to the saw, and we query what does not add up. We will price it properly in writing, and we will tell you if it is not worth doing.
Bear in mind for this area: valleys terraces share a repeating bay and sash format that suits batch manufacture.

Learn more →Rise, going and headroom in Blackwood
Three numbers decide whether a staircase is comfortable or awkward, and they are the first things we measure.
Rise
Maximum 220mm per step for a private stair under Part K. Consistent to within 5mm across the whole flight, because the foot notices what the eye does not.
Going
Minimum 220mm. Rise and going together must satisfy the pitch rule, which is why a flight cannot simply be shortened to fit a smaller opening.
Headroom
2m measured vertically from the pitch line. This is the constraint that most often forces a winder instead of a straight flight.
What clients tell us
Feedback collected directly from completed projects. Full written references are available on request before you commit.
“The headroom was tight and they redesigned the winder rather than telling us it could not be done.”
Verified client, Cardiff and South Wales“Dry-assembled in the workshop first, so installation day was genuinely uneventful.”
Verified client, Cardiff and South Wales“No squeaks at all a year on, which was the whole reason we replaced the old one.”

Do you fit, or supply only?
Both. Supply-only is common for trade and contractor clients. For private clients we usually recommend supply and fit, because responsibility for the fit and the finish then sits in one place.
Is the timber certified?
All our stock is FSC certified and chain-of-custody documentation is supplied with the order, which most main contractors and specifiers now require for their records.
Can you match an existing profile?
Yes. If you can supply a section, a photograph with a rule in shot, or an old unit, we can replicate the profile. For conservation work this is usually the condition the planning officer will apply.
Do you work in hardwood or softwood?
Both. Engineered hardwood is the default where movement or exposure is a concern, and slow-grown softwood is often the better value choice for painted work in sheltered positions. We will tell you which we would specify and why.
How long does a typical order take?
Most made-to-size orders run six to ten weeks from survey to delivery. Conservation and heavily detailed work can take longer, and we confirm the lead time in writing at quotation rather than leaving it open.
