Bespoke staircases in Port Talbot
Loft Conversion Stairs is one of those jobs in Port Talbot where the survey decides everything. With valleys terraces, Victorian maritime villas and civic Portland stone frontages making up much of the area, off-the-shelf sizes rarely line up. Locally you are contending with very high rainfall with strong Atlantic and Bristol Channel exposure, so prolonged wetting decay and finish failure on valley-facing elevations is the fault we are called out to. The detail we will not compromise on is fitting a compliant flight into an opening that barely allows one.
Manufacture only starts once the survey figures are agreed with you in writing. Photographs and approximate sizes are all we need to start.
Something particular to this area: valleys terraces share a repeating bay and sash format that suits batch manufacture.

Learn more →Rise, going and headroom in Port Talbot
Three numbers decide whether a staircase is comfortable or awkward, and they are the first things we measure.
Rise
Maximum 220mm per step for a private stair under Part K. Consistent to within 5mm across the whole flight, because the foot notices what the eye does not.
Going
Minimum 220mm. Rise and going together must satisfy the pitch rule, which is why a flight cannot simply be shortened to fit a smaller opening.
Headroom
2m measured vertically from the pitch line. This is the constraint that most often forces a winder instead of a straight flight.
What clients tell us
Feedback collected directly from completed projects. Full written references are available on request before you commit.
“The headroom was tight and they redesigned the winder rather than telling us it could not be done.”
Verified client, Cardiff and South Wales“Dry-assembled in the workshop first, so installation day was genuinely uneventful.”
Verified client, Cardiff and South Wales“No squeaks at all a year on, which was the whole reason we replaced the old one.”

What guarantee do you provide?
Ten years on workmanship, covering manufacture and the factory-applied finish. Where we install, the installation is covered too. It is issued in writing with the handover paperwork.
How long does a typical order take?
Most made-to-size orders run six to ten weeks from survey to delivery. Conservation and heavily detailed work can take longer, and we confirm the lead time in writing at quotation rather than leaving it open.
How do you handle glazing?
Standard double glazed units for most work, and slim-cavity units where a conservation officer has restricted sightlines. Single glazing with putty lines is available where the consent requires it.
Is the timber certified?
All our stock is FSC certified and chain-of-custody documentation is supplied with the order, which most main contractors and specifiers now require for their records.
Can you price from drawings?
Yes. Send a drawing set or a schedule and we will price against it. If anything is ambiguous we will query it before quoting rather than assume and reprice later.
