What we see in Wiltshire

What makes Bespoke Staircases work in Wiltshire is usually invisible once it is finished. With chalk-downland cob and thatch, Bath stone terraces and garrison housing making up much of the area, off-the-shelf sizes rarely line up. Set against exposed downland wind with driving rain, most joinery here eventually shows wind-driven water forced past worn weatherseals. The detail we will not compromise on is setting out so the rise and going work on the day, not just on paper.

We check on site before committing anything to the saw, and we query what does not add up. Get in touch and we will be straight with you about cost and timescale.

One local point to factor in: cob and thatch properties need breathable finishes rather than film-forming coatings.

Rise, going and headroom in Wiltshire

Three numbers decide whether a staircase is comfortable or awkward, and they are the first things we measure.

Rise

Maximum 220mm per step for a private stair under Part K. Consistent to within 5mm across the whole flight, because the foot notices what the eye does not.

Going

Minimum 220mm. Rise and going together must satisfy the pitch rule, which is why a flight cannot simply be shortened to fit a smaller opening.

Headroom

2m measured vertically from the pitch line. This is the constraint that most often forces a winder instead of a straight flight.

What clients tell us

Feedback collected directly from completed projects. Full written references are available on request before you commit.

“The headroom was tight and they redesigned the winder rather than telling us it could not be done.”

Verified client, Wiltshire

“Dry-assembled in the workshop first, so installation day was genuinely uneventful.”

Verified client, Wiltshire

“No squeaks at all a year on, which was the whole reason we replaced the old one.”

Wiltshire questions

Do you cover Wiltshire?

Yes. We cover the whole of Wiltshire including Swindon, Salisbury, Chippenham, Trowbridge and the surrounding villages. Cob and thatch properties need breathable finishes rather than film-forming coatings. Because exposed downland wind with driving rain, we allow for it at survey stage rather than discovering it on the day.

What guarantee do you provide?

Ten years on workmanship, covering manufacture and the factory-applied finish. Where we install, the installation is covered too. It is issued in writing with the handover paperwork.

Do you fit, or supply only?

Both. Supply-only is common for trade and contractor clients. For private clients we usually recommend supply and fit, because responsibility for the fit and the finish then sits in one place.

Is the timber certified?

All our stock is FSC certified and chain-of-custody documentation is supplied with the order, which most main contractors and specifiers now require for their records.

Can you match an existing profile?

Yes. If you can supply a section, a photograph with a rule in shot, or an old unit, we can replicate the profile. For conservation work this is usually the condition the planning officer will apply.

Do you work in hardwood or softwood?

Both. Engineered hardwood is the default where movement or exposure is a concern, and slow-grown softwood is often the better value choice for painted work in sheltered positions. We will tell you which we would specify and why.
