Bespoke staircases in Calne

What makes Staircase Parts work in Calne is usually invisible once it is finished. Around here it is chalk-downland cob and thatch, Bath stone terraces and garrison housing, and that alone rules out anything bought by the pallet. The weather does the rest: exposed downland wind with driving rain here, and wind-driven water forced past worn weatherseals as the predictable result. Where we put the effort is matched components for anyone doing their own installation.

We check on site before committing anything to the saw, and we query what does not add up. Tell us the problem rather than the solution and we will advise on both.

Local factor worth flagging early: cob and thatch properties need breathable finishes rather than film-forming coatings.

What we cover locally

Survey visits in Calne are usually booked within a week. There is no charge for the survey and no obligation to proceed.

Rise, going and headroom in Calne

Three numbers decide whether a staircase is comfortable or awkward, and they are the first things we measure.

Rise

Maximum 220mm per step for a private stair under Part K. Consistent to within 5mm across the whole flight, because the foot notices what the eye does not.

Going

Minimum 220mm. Rise and going together must satisfy the pitch rule, which is why a flight cannot simply be shortened to fit a smaller opening.

Headroom

2m measured vertically from the pitch line. This is the constraint that most often forces a winder instead of a straight flight.

What clients tell us

Feedback collected directly from completed projects. Full written references are available on request before you commit.

“The headroom was tight and they redesigned the winder rather than telling us it could not be done.”

Verified client, Wiltshire

“Dry-assembled in the workshop first, so installation day was genuinely uneventful.”

Verified client, Wiltshire

“No squeaks at all a year on, which was the whole reason we replaced the old one.”

Calne questions

Do you work in hardwood or softwood?

Both. Engineered hardwood is the default where movement or exposure is a concern, and slow-grown softwood is often the better value choice for painted work in sheltered positions. We will tell you which we would specify and why.

What guarantee do you provide?

Ten years on workmanship, covering manufacture and the factory-applied finish. Where we install, the installation is covered too. It is issued in writing with the handover paperwork.

Will the finish need maintaining?

A factory-applied microporous finish typically needs inspection every three to five years, sooner on exposed coastal elevations. Maintaining it is far cheaper than letting a coating fail and the timber take up water.

How long does a typical order take?

Most made-to-size orders run six to ten weeks from survey to delivery. Conservation and heavily detailed work can take longer, and we confirm the lead time in writing at quotation rather than leaving it open.

Do you fit, or supply only?

Both. Supply-only is common for trade and contractor clients. For private clients we usually recommend supply and fit, because responsibility for the fit and the finish then sits in one place.
