Bespoke staircases in Pontefract

If you are looking at Cut String Staircases in Pontefract, the timber is only half the decision. Most of what we survey locally is millstone grit terraces, weavers' cottages and Victorian civic frontages, which is not built to any modern module. Pennine exposure with hard frost and horizontal rain is the local complication, and frost damage at end grain and blown joints on exposed hillside stock is what it eventually causes. This is really a job about the cut string profile, where any inaccuracy shows immediately.

We would rather spend an hour surveying than a week correcting. Give us the basics and you will have a written figure, not a range that moves later.

A local consideration we always raise: gritstone reveals hold water against frames, so drainage detail is critical.

What we cover locally

Survey visits in Pontefract are usually booked within a week. There is no charge for the survey and no obligation to proceed.

Rise, going and headroom in Pontefract

Three numbers decide whether a staircase is comfortable or awkward, and they are the first things we measure.

Rise

Maximum 220mm per step for a private stair under Part K. Consistent to within 5mm across the whole flight, because the foot notices what the eye does not.

Going

Minimum 220mm. Rise and going together must satisfy the pitch rule, which is why a flight cannot simply be shortened to fit a smaller opening.

Headroom

2m measured vertically from the pitch line. This is the constraint that most often forces a winder instead of a straight flight.

What clients tell us

Feedback collected directly from completed projects. Full written references are available on request before you commit.

“The headroom was tight and they redesigned the winder rather than telling us it could not be done.”

Verified client, West Yorkshire

“Dry-assembled in the workshop first, so installation day was genuinely uneventful.”

Verified client, West Yorkshire

“No squeaks at all a year on, which was the whole reason we replaced the old one.”

Pontefract questions

Do you deliver nationwide?

Yes, we deliver across England, Wales and Scotland. Delivery is priced into the quotation so there is no separate charge added later.

What if the opening is out of square?

Most older openings are. The survey records the actual dimensions at several points and the unit is manufactured to suit, which is the main reason we survey rather than work from the sizes given over the phone.

Do you work in hardwood or softwood?

Both. Engineered hardwood is the default where movement or exposure is a concern, and slow-grown softwood is often the better value choice for painted work in sheltered positions. We will tell you which we would specify and why.

Is the timber certified?

All our stock is FSC certified and chain-of-custody documentation is supplied with the order, which most main contractors and specifiers now require for their records.

What guarantee do you provide?

Ten years on workmanship, covering manufacture and the factory-applied finish. Where we install, the installation is covered too. It is issued in writing with the handover paperwork.
