Bespoke staircases in Banstead
Cantilever Staircases around Banstead is a different job from one street to the next. Around here it is interwar detached stock, Arts and Crafts houses and 1930s semis, and that alone rules out anything bought by the pallet. mild but damp, with heavy tree cover holding moisture against elevations sets the pace of decay, and sap staining and green growth on north elevations followed by joint opening is how it shows up first. The value is in the hidden steelwork that makes a floating tread genuinely safe, not in the timber bill.
The measuring is done by the people responsible for the fit, which concentrates the mind. Send us sizes and a photograph and we will come back with a fixed written price.
A detail specific to this area: high-value stock where owners specify hardwood over softwood as standard.

Learn more →Rise, going and headroom in Banstead
Three numbers decide whether a staircase is comfortable or awkward, and they are the first things we measure.
Rise
Maximum 220mm per step for a private stair under Part K. Consistent to within 5mm across the whole flight, because the foot notices what the eye does not.
Going
Minimum 220mm. Rise and going together must satisfy the pitch rule, which is why a flight cannot simply be shortened to fit a smaller opening.
Headroom
2m measured vertically from the pitch line. This is the constraint that most often forces a winder instead of a straight flight.
What clients tell us
Feedback collected directly from completed projects. Full written references are available on request before you commit.
“The headroom was tight and they redesigned the winder rather than telling us it could not be done.”
Verified client, Surrey“Dry-assembled in the workshop first, so installation day was genuinely uneventful.”
Verified client, Surrey“No squeaks at all a year on, which was the whole reason we replaced the old one.”
Verified client, SurreyBanstead questions
Is the timber certified?
All our stock is FSC certified and chain-of-custody documentation is supplied with the order, which most main contractors and specifiers now require for their records.
Can you match an existing profile?
Yes. If you can supply a section, a photograph with a rule in shot, or an old unit, we can replicate the profile. For conservation work this is usually the condition the planning officer will apply.
Do you work in hardwood or softwood?
Both. Engineered hardwood is the default where movement or exposure is a concern, and slow-grown softwood is often the better value choice for painted work in sheltered positions. We will tell you which we would specify and why.
How long does a typical order take?
Most made-to-size orders run six to ten weeks from survey to delivery. Conservation and heavily detailed work can take longer, and we confirm the lead time in writing at quotation rather than leaving it open.
What if the opening is out of square?
Most older openings are. The survey records the actual dimensions at several points and the unit is manufactured to suit, which is the main reason we survey rather than work from the sizes given over the phone.
