Bespoke staircases in Penkridge

The hard part of Cut String Staircases in Penkridge is not the making, it is the measuring. The building stock is pottery-era terraces, estate cottages and moorland stone housing, so we expect variation before we ever pick up a tape. The other factor is cold upland exposure in the Moorlands and damp valley air in the Potteries, which is why sill and cill decay where render meets timber on unventilated details is the most common reason people call us. The value is in the cut string profile, where any inaccuracy shows immediately, not in the timber bill.

Nothing goes into manufacture until a surveyor has checked each opening on site. Photographs and approximate sizes are all we need to start.

Local factor worth flagging early: moorland properties need heavier sections than lowland equivalents.

Rise, going and headroom in Penkridge

Three numbers decide whether a staircase is comfortable or awkward, and they are the first things we measure.

Rise

Maximum 220mm per step for a private stair under Part K. Consistent to within 5mm across the whole flight, because the foot notices what the eye does not.

Going

Minimum 220mm. Rise and going together must satisfy the pitch rule, which is why a flight cannot simply be shortened to fit a smaller opening.

Headroom

2m measured vertically from the pitch line. This is the constraint that most often forces a winder instead of a straight flight.

“The headroom was tight and they redesigned the winder rather than telling us it could not be done.”

“Dry-assembled in the workshop first, so installation day was genuinely uneventful.”

“No squeaks at all a year on, which was the whole reason we replaced the old one.”

Penkridge questions

Will the finish need maintaining?

A factory-applied microporous finish typically needs inspection every three to five years, sooner on exposed coastal elevations. Maintaining it is far cheaper than letting a coating fail and the timber take up water.

Can you work on a listed building?

Yes, and a significant share of our work is listed or conservation area. We can supply drawings and section details to support a listed building consent or planning application, though the consent itself remains the owner's responsibility.

What guarantee do you provide?

Ten years on workmanship, covering manufacture and the factory-applied finish. Where we install, the installation is covered too. It is issued in writing with the handover paperwork.

Is the timber certified?

All our stock is FSC certified and chain-of-custody documentation is supplied with the order, which most main contractors and specifiers now require for their records.

Do you work in hardwood or softwood?

Both. Engineered hardwood is the default where movement or exposure is a concern, and slow-grown softwood is often the better value choice for painted work in sheltered positions. We will tell you which we would specify and why.
