Bespoke staircases in Bridgnorth

People come to us about Cantilever Staircases in Bridgnorth once the cheap option has already failed. Most of what we survey locally is medieval timber framing, Ironbridge industrial housing and border farmsteads, which is not built to any modern module. The exposure here is Welsh border rainfall with high sustained humidity, which is exactly the condition that causes fungal decay in poorly ventilated frame cavities. The value is in the hidden steelwork that makes a floating tread genuinely safe, not in the timber bill.

Nothing goes into manufacture until a surveyor has checked each opening on site. We will price it properly in writing, and we will tell you if it is not worth doing.

Bear in mind for this area: one of the densest concentrations of listed timber-framed buildings in England.

Rise, going and headroom in Bridgnorth

Three numbers decide whether a staircase is comfortable or awkward, and they are the first things we measure.

Rise

Maximum 220mm per step for a private stair under Part K. Consistent to within 5mm across the whole flight, because the foot notices what the eye does not.

Going

Minimum 220mm. Rise and going together must satisfy the pitch rule, which is why a flight cannot simply be shortened to fit a smaller opening.

Headroom

2m measured vertically from the pitch line. This is the constraint that most often forces a winder instead of a straight flight.

What clients tell us

Feedback collected directly from completed projects. Full written references are available on request before you commit.

“The headroom was tight and they redesigned the winder rather than telling us it could not be done.”

Verified client, Shropshire

“Dry-assembled in the workshop first, so installation day was genuinely uneventful.”

Verified client, Shropshire

“No squeaks at all a year on, which was the whole reason we replaced the old one.”

Bridgnorth questions

Do you work in hardwood or softwood?

Both. Engineered hardwood is the default where movement or exposure is a concern, and slow-grown softwood is often the better value choice for painted work in sheltered positions. We will tell you which we would specify and why.

How do you handle glazing?

Standard double glazed units for most work, and slim-cavity units where a conservation officer has restricted sightlines. Single glazing with putty lines is available where the consent requires it.

Can you match an existing profile?

Yes. If you can supply a section, a photograph with a rule in shot, or an old unit, we can replicate the profile. For conservation work this is usually the condition the planning officer will apply.

Will the finish need maintaining?

A factory-applied microporous finish typically needs inspection every three to five years, sooner on exposed coastal elevations. Maintaining it is far cheaper than letting a coating fail and the timber take up water.

Is the timber certified?

All our stock is FSC certified and chain-of-custody documentation is supplied with the order, which most main contractors and specifiers now require for their records.
