Bespoke staircases in Thetford
The Cantilever Staircases we make for Thetford is set out from a survey, not a size chart. The housing here is largely flint and pantile cottages, Georgian merchant houses and coastal resort stock, and that shapes what will actually fit. The exposure here is exposed North Sea easterlies with salt-laden wind, which is exactly the condition that causes salt damage and finish erosion on east-facing coastal elevations. Our focus on this is the hidden steelwork that makes a floating tread genuinely safe.
We would rather spend an hour surveying than a week correcting. Tell us the problem rather than the solution and we will advise on both.
Worth knowing locally: flint walls give minimal reveal, so weathering detail carries the whole load.

Learn more →Rise, going and headroom in Thetford
Three numbers decide whether a staircase is comfortable or awkward, and they are the first things we measure.
Rise
Maximum 220mm per step for a private stair under Part K. Consistent to within 5mm across the whole flight, because the foot notices what the eye does not.
Going
Minimum 220mm. Rise and going together must satisfy the pitch rule, which is why a flight cannot simply be shortened to fit a smaller opening.
Headroom
2m measured vertically from the pitch line. This is the constraint that most often forces a winder instead of a straight flight.
What clients tell us
Feedback collected directly from completed projects. Full written references are available on request before you commit.
“The headroom was tight and they redesigned the winder rather than telling us it could not be done.”
Verified client, Norfolk“Dry-assembled in the workshop first, so installation day was genuinely uneventful.”
Verified client, Norfolk“No squeaks at all a year on, which was the whole reason we replaced the old one.”
Verified client, NorfolkThetford questions
Can you match an existing profile?
Yes. If you can supply a section, a photograph with a rule in shot, or an old unit, we can replicate the profile. For conservation work this is usually the condition the planning officer will apply.
Do you deliver nationwide?
Yes, we deliver across England, Wales and Scotland. Delivery is priced into the quotation so there is no separate charge added later.
What guarantee do you provide?
Ten years on workmanship, covering manufacture and the factory-applied finish. Where we install, the installation is covered too. It is issued in writing with the handover paperwork.
How long does a typical order take?
Most made-to-size orders run six to ten weeks from survey to delivery. Conservation and heavily detailed work can take longer, and we confirm the lead time in writing at quotation rather than leaving it open.
How do you handle glazing?
Standard double glazed units for most work, and slim-cavity units where a conservation officer has restricted sightlines. Single glazing with putty lines is available where the consent requires it.
