Bespoke staircases in Pembridge

Most Cut String Staircases enquiries we take in Pembridge start with an opening that is not a standard size. Local property is overwhelmingly black-and-white villages, cider-farm outbuildings and rural stone cottages, which is why we never quote from a catalogue. With wet westerly weather and long damp winters in the mix, sustained wetting decay at ground-contact and threshold level is a question of when rather than whether. The value is in the cut string profile, where any inaccuracy shows immediately, not in the timber bill.

We check on site before committing anything to the saw, and we query what does not add up. Tell us what you are working with and we will put a fixed figure in writing.

Something particular to this area: rural properties often need full frame renewal rather than piecemeal repair.

What we cover locally

Survey visits in Pembridge are usually booked within a week. There is no charge for the survey and no obligation to proceed.

Rise, going and headroom in Pembridge

Three numbers decide whether a staircase is comfortable or awkward, and they are the first things we measure.

Rise

Maximum 220mm per step for a private stair under Part K. Consistent to within 5mm across the whole flight, because the foot notices what the eye does not.

Going

Minimum 220mm. Rise and going together must satisfy the pitch rule, which is why a flight cannot simply be shortened to fit a smaller opening.

Headroom

2m measured vertically from the pitch line. This is the constraint that most often forces a winder instead of a straight flight.

What clients tell us

Feedback collected directly from completed projects. Full written references are available on request before you commit.

“The headroom was tight and they redesigned the winder rather than telling us it could not be done.”

Verified client, Herefordshire

“Dry-assembled in the workshop first, so installation day was genuinely uneventful.”

Verified client, Herefordshire

“No squeaks at all a year on, which was the whole reason we replaced the old one.”

Pembridge questions

How do you handle glazing?

Standard double glazed units for most work, and slim-cavity units where a conservation officer has restricted sightlines. Single glazing with putty lines is available where the consent requires it.

Do you work in hardwood or softwood?

Both. Engineered hardwood is the default where movement or exposure is a concern, and slow-grown softwood is often the better value choice for painted work in sheltered positions. We will tell you which we would specify and why.

Can you work on a listed building?

Yes, and a significant share of our work is listed or conservation area. We can supply drawings and section details to support a listed building consent or planning application, though the consent itself remains the owner's responsibility.

How long does a typical order take?

Most made-to-size orders run six to ten weeks from survey to delivery. Conservation and heavily detailed work can take longer, and we confirm the lead time in writing at quotation rather than leaving it open.

Do you take a deposit?

Not before the measured survey. A deposit is only requested once the survey is complete and you have approved the final schedule and price.
