What we see in Hampshire

Half the Bespoke Staircases problems we fix in Hampshire started as a sizing assumption. Property here runs to naval-era terraces, New Forest timber-framed cottages and 1960s coastal estates, and each of those brings its own set of dimensions. Add high wind-driven rain off the Solent to that and water ingress at head and jamb on exposed south-west elevations becomes the usual trigger for replacement. This is really a job about setting out so the rise and going work on the day, not just on paper.

A surveyor visits first and records the real dimensions, at several points on each opening. Tell us what you are working with and we will put a fixed figure in writing.

Worth knowing locally: conservation stock in Winchester and Lymington usually requires slim-profile glazing.

Rise, going and headroom in Hampshire

Three numbers decide whether a staircase is comfortable or awkward, and they are the first things we measure.

Rise

Maximum 220mm per step for a private stair under Part K. Consistent to within 5mm across the whole flight, because the foot notices what the eye does not.

Going

Minimum 220mm. Rise and going together must satisfy the pitch rule, which is why a flight cannot simply be shortened to fit a smaller opening.

Headroom

2m measured vertically from the pitch line. This is the constraint that most often forces a winder instead of a straight flight.

Feedback collected directly from completed projects. Full written references are available on request before you commit.

“The headroom was tight and they redesigned the winder rather than telling us it could not be done.”

“Dry-assembled in the workshop first, so installation day was genuinely uneventful.”

“No squeaks at all a year on, which was the whole reason we replaced the old one.”

Hampshire questions

Do you cover Hampshire?

Yes. We cover the whole of Hampshire including Southampton, Portsmouth, Basingstoke, Winchester and the surrounding villages. Conservation stock in Winchester and Lymington usually requires slim-profile glazing. Because high wind-driven rain off the Solent, we allow for it at survey stage rather than discovering it on the day.

Do you deliver nationwide?

Yes, we deliver across England, Wales and Scotland. Delivery is priced into the quotation so there is no separate charge added later.

Can you work on a listed building?

Yes, and a significant share of our work is listed or conservation area. We can supply drawings and section details to support a listed building consent or planning application, though the consent itself remains the owner's responsibility.

Do you fit, or supply only?

Both. Supply-only is common for trade and contractor clients. For private clients we usually recommend supply and fit, because responsibility for the fit and the finish then sits in one place.

Do you work in hardwood or softwood?

Both. Engineered hardwood is the default where movement or exposure is a concern, and slow-grown softwood is often the better value choice for painted work in sheltered positions. We will tell you which we would specify and why.

Can you price from drawings?

Yes. Send a drawing set or a schedule and we will price against it. If anything is ambiguous we will query it before quoting rather than assume and reprice later.
