Bespoke staircases in Portsmouth
Cut String Staircases across Portsmouth tends to be driven by the condition of what is already there. Local property is overwhelmingly naval-era terraces, New Forest timber-framed cottages and 1960s coastal estates, which is why we never quote from a catalogue. Because of high wind-driven rain off the Solent, we see water ingress at head and jamb on exposed south-west elevations more often here than in most of the country. This is really a job about the cut string profile, where any inaccuracy shows immediately.
We would rather spend an hour surveying than a week correcting. Tell us the problem rather than the solution and we will advise on both.
Local factor worth flagging early: conservation stock in Winchester and Lymington usually requires slim-profile glazing.

Learn more →Rise, going and headroom in Portsmouth
Three numbers decide whether a staircase is comfortable or awkward, and they are the first things we measure.
Rise
Maximum 220mm per step for a private stair under Part K. Consistent to within 5mm across the whole flight, because the foot notices what the eye does not.
Going
Minimum 220mm. Rise and going together must satisfy the pitch rule, which is why a flight cannot simply be shortened to fit a smaller opening.
Headroom
2m measured vertically from the pitch line. This is the constraint that most often forces a winder instead of a straight flight.
What clients tell us
Feedback collected directly from completed projects. Full written references are available on request before you commit.
“The headroom was tight and they redesigned the winder rather than telling us it could not be done.”
Verified client, Hampshire“Dry-assembled in the workshop first, so installation day was genuinely uneventful.”
Verified client, Hampshire“No squeaks at all a year on, which was the whole reason we replaced the old one.”

Do you work in hardwood or softwood?
Both. Engineered hardwood is the default where movement or exposure is a concern, and slow-grown softwood is often the better value choice for painted work in sheltered positions. We will tell you which we would specify and why.
How long does a typical order take?
Most made-to-size orders run six to ten weeks from survey to delivery. Conservation and heavily detailed work can take longer, and we confirm the lead time in writing at quotation rather than leaving it open.
What if the opening is out of square?
Most older openings are. The survey records the actual dimensions at several points and the unit is manufactured to suit, which is the main reason we survey rather than work from the sizes given over the phone.
Can you price from drawings?
Yes. Send a drawing set or a schedule and we will price against it. If anything is ambiguous we will query it before quoting rather than assume and reprice later.
Do you deliver nationwide?
Yes, we deliver across England, Wales and Scotland. Delivery is priced into the quotation so there is no separate charge added later.
