Bespoke staircases in Sherborne

Most Bespoke Staircases enquiries we take in Sherborne start with an opening that is not a standard size. Local stock is dominated by Purbeck stone cottages, Victorian resort villas and thatched inland villages, which sets the sizes and profiles we work to. Locally you are contending with exposed Channel coast with intense salt and UV load, so rapid finish failure and fixings corrosion within a few seasons on seafront stock is the fault we are called out to. What you are paying for is setting out so the rise and going work on the day, not just on paper.

The survey happens before manufacture, which is why our units fit without packing or trimming. Ask us for a figure and you will get one, with the lead time stated alongside it.

A detail specific to this area: Jurassic Coast properties need stainless fixings as standard, not an upgrade.

What we cover locally

Survey visits in Sherborne are usually booked within a week. There is no charge for the survey and no obligation to proceed.

Rise, going and headroom in Sherborne

Three numbers decide whether a staircase is comfortable or awkward, and they are the first things we measure.

Rise

Maximum 220mm per step for a private stair under Part K. Consistent to within 5mm across the whole flight, because the foot notices what the eye does not.

Going

Minimum 220mm. Rise and going together must satisfy the pitch rule, which is why a flight cannot simply be shortened to fit a smaller opening.

Headroom

2m measured vertically from the pitch line. This is the constraint that most often forces a winder instead of a straight flight.

What clients tell us

Feedback collected directly from completed projects. Full written references are available on request before you commit.

“The headroom was tight and they redesigned the winder rather than telling us it could not be done.”

“Dry-assembled in the workshop first, so installation day was genuinely uneventful.”

Verified client, Dorset

“No squeaks at all a year on, which was the whole reason we replaced the old one.”

Sherborne questions

Can you work on a listed building?

Yes, and a significant share of our work is listed or conservation area. We can supply drawings and section details to support a listed building consent or planning application, though the consent itself remains the owner's responsibility.

Do you take a deposit?

Not before the measured survey. A deposit is only requested once the survey is complete and you have approved the final schedule and price.

What guarantee do you provide?

Ten years on workmanship, covering manufacture and the factory-applied finish. Where we install, the installation is covered too. It is issued in writing with the handover paperwork.

Do you fit, or supply only?

Both. Supply-only is common for trade and contractor clients. For private clients we usually recommend supply and fit, because responsibility for the fit and the finish then sits in one place.

Is the timber certified?

All our stock is FSC certified and chain-of-custody documentation is supplied with the order, which most main contractors and specifiers now require for their records.
