Bespoke staircases in Wigton

Loft Conversion Stairs in Wigton rewards patience at the setting-out stage. Local property is overwhelmingly Lakeland slate cottages, Georgian Carlisle stock and coastal industrial terraces, which is why we never quote from a catalogue. Add the highest rainfall in England with severe upland exposure to that and sustained saturation decay and finish failure within short recoating cycles becomes the usual trigger for replacement. The value is in fitting a compliant flight into an opening that barely allows one, not in the timber bill.

Nothing goes into manufacture until a surveyor has checked each opening on site. A quick call or a photograph of the opening is usually enough to get you a price.

A detail specific to this area: Lake District National Park controls window style closely across the central valleys.

What we cover locally

Survey visits in Wigton are usually booked within a week. There is no charge for the survey and no obligation to proceed.

Rise, going and headroom in Wigton

Three numbers decide whether a staircase is comfortable or awkward, and they are the first things we measure.

Rise

Maximum 220mm per step for a private stair under Part K. Consistent to within 5mm across the whole flight, because the foot notices what the eye does not.

Going

Minimum 220mm. Rise and going together must satisfy the pitch rule, which is why a flight cannot simply be shortened to fit a smaller opening.

Headroom

2m measured vertically from the pitch line. This is the constraint that most often forces a winder instead of a straight flight.

What clients tell us

Feedback collected directly from completed projects. Full written references are available on request before you commit.

“The headroom was tight and they redesigned the winder rather than telling us it could not be done.”

Verified client, Cumbria

“Dry-assembled in the workshop first, so installation day was genuinely uneventful.”

Verified client, Cumbria

“No squeaks at all a year on, which was the whole reason we replaced the old one.”

Wigton questions

Can you work on a listed building?

Yes, and a significant share of our work is listed or conservation area. We can supply drawings and section details to support a listed building consent or planning application, though the consent itself remains the owner's responsibility.

Do you take a deposit?

Not before the measured survey. A deposit is only requested once the survey is complete and you have approved the final schedule and price.

What guarantee do you provide?

Ten years on workmanship, covering manufacture and the factory-applied finish. Where we install, the installation is covered too. It is issued in writing with the handover paperwork.

Do you fit, or supply only?

Both. Supply-only is common for trade and contractor clients. For private clients we usually recommend supply and fit, because responsibility for the fit and the finish then sits in one place.

Is the timber certified?

All our stock is FSC certified and chain-of-custody documentation is supplied with the order, which most main contractors and specifiers now require for their records.
