Bespoke staircases in Stockton-on-Tees

If Cantilever Staircases in Stockton-on-Tees were straightforward, there would be a stock size for it. With colliery terraces, Georgian Durham city stock and Pennine stone housing making up much of the area, off-the-shelf sizes rarely line up. What accelerates it is cold upland winters with heavy rainfall, and frost and saturation damage on unmaintained painted softwood follows sooner than owners expect. In practice that means the hidden steelwork that makes a floating tread genuinely safe.

A surveyor visits first and records the real dimensions, at several points on each opening. Ask us for a figure and you will get one, with the lead time stated alongside it.

One thing that catches people out here: Durham's cathedral setting carries World Heritage-level design scrutiny.

Rise, going and headroom in Stockton-on-Tees

Three numbers decide whether a staircase is comfortable or awkward, and they are the first things we measure.

Rise

Maximum 220mm per step for a private stair under Part K. Consistent to within 5mm across the whole flight, because the foot notices what the eye does not.

Going

Minimum 220mm. Rise and going together must satisfy the pitch rule, which is why a flight cannot simply be shortened to fit a smaller opening.

Headroom

2m measured vertically from the pitch line. This is the constraint that most often forces a winder instead of a straight flight.

“The headroom was tight and they redesigned the winder rather than telling us it could not be done.”

“Dry-assembled in the workshop first, so installation day was genuinely uneventful.”

“No squeaks at all a year on, which was the whole reason we replaced the old one.”

Stockton-on-Tees questions

Do you work in hardwood or softwood?

Both. Engineered hardwood is the default where movement or exposure is a concern, and slow-grown softwood is often the better value choice for painted work in sheltered positions. We will tell you which we would specify and why.

What guarantee do you provide?

Ten years on workmanship, covering manufacture and the factory-applied finish. Where we install, the installation is covered too. It is issued in writing with the handover paperwork.

Will the finish need maintaining?

A factory-applied microporous finish typically needs inspection every three to five years, sooner on exposed coastal elevations. Maintaining it is far cheaper than letting a coating fail and the timber take up water.

How long does a typical order take?

Most made-to-size orders run six to ten weeks from survey to delivery. Conservation and heavily detailed work can take longer, and we confirm the lead time in writing at quotation rather than leaving it open.

Do you fit, or supply only?

Both. Supply-only is common for trade and contractor clients. For private clients we usually recommend supply and fit, because responsibility for the fit and the finish then sits in one place.
