Bespoke staircases in Ely
Cantilever Staircases is one of those jobs in Ely where the survey decides everything. Local stock is dominated by college-town Georgian stock, fenland brick farmhouses and rapid new-build growth, which sets the sizes and profiles we work to. The exposure here is the driest region in the UK with exposed fen wind, which is exactly the condition that causes shrinkage and joint opening rather than rot in most inland stock. What you are paying for is the hidden steelwork that makes a floating tread genuinely safe.
The site visit comes first, because assumptions made in an office get paid for on site. Send us sizes and a photograph and we will come back with a fixed written price.
Something particular to this area: college and listed stock in Cambridge demands exact historic replication.

Learn more →Rise, going and headroom in Ely
Three numbers decide whether a staircase is comfortable or awkward, and they are the first things we measure.
Rise
Maximum 220mm per step for a private stair under Part K. Consistent to within 5mm across the whole flight, because the foot notices what the eye does not.
Going
Minimum 220mm. Rise and going together must satisfy the pitch rule, which is why a flight cannot simply be shortened to fit a smaller opening.
Headroom
2m measured vertically from the pitch line. This is the constraint that most often forces a winder instead of a straight flight.
What clients tell us
Feedback collected directly from completed projects. Full written references are available on request before you commit.
“The headroom was tight and they redesigned the winder rather than telling us it could not be done.”
Verified client, Cambridgeshire“Dry-assembled in the workshop first, so installation day was genuinely uneventful.”
Verified client, Cambridgeshire“No squeaks at all a year on, which was the whole reason we replaced the old one.”

Can you work on a listed building?
Yes, and a significant share of our work is listed or conservation area. We can supply drawings and section details to support a listed building consent or planning application, though the consent itself remains the owner's responsibility.
What guarantee do you provide?
Ten years on workmanship, covering manufacture and the factory-applied finish. Where we install, the installation is covered too. It is issued in writing with the handover paperwork.
Is the timber certified?
All our stock is FSC certified and chain-of-custody documentation is supplied with the order, which most main contractors and specifiers now require for their records.
Do you work in hardwood or softwood?
Both. Engineered hardwood is the default where movement or exposure is a concern, and slow-grown softwood is often the better value choice for painted work in sheltered positions. We will tell you which we would specify and why.
What if the opening is out of square?
Most older openings are. The survey records the actual dimensions at several points and the unit is manufactured to suit, which is the main reason we survey rather than work from the sizes given over the phone.
