Bespoke staircases in Woburn

Getting Staircase Renovation right in Woburn depends on detail that a price list cannot capture. Around here it is Victorian hat-trade terraces, chalk-belt cottages and large modern estates, and that alone rules out anything bought by the pallet. Locally you are contending with dry inland conditions with cold winter frost pockets, so frost damage to end grain and paint cracking on older softwood units is the fault we are called out to. The value is in curing movement and squeak rather than just covering it over, not in the timber bill.

Manufacture only starts once the survey figures are agreed with you in writing. Give us the basics and you will have a written figure, not a range that moves later.

A detail specific to this area: Bedfordshire stock is dominated by repair and upgrade rather than heritage matching.

What we cover locally

Survey visits in Woburn are usually booked within a week. There is no charge for the survey and no obligation to proceed.

Rise, going and headroom in Woburn

Three numbers decide whether a staircase is comfortable or awkward, and they are the first things we measure.

Rise

Maximum 220mm per step for a private stair under Part K. Consistent to within 5mm across the whole flight, because the foot notices what the eye does not.

Going

Minimum 220mm. Rise and going together must satisfy the pitch rule, which is why a flight cannot simply be shortened to fit a smaller opening.

Headroom

2m measured vertically from the pitch line. This is the constraint that most often forces a winder instead of a straight flight.

What clients tell us

Feedback collected directly from completed projects. Full written references are available on request before you commit.

“The headroom was tight and they redesigned the winder rather than telling us it could not be done.”

Verified client, Bedfordshire

“Dry-assembled in the workshop first, so installation day was genuinely uneventful.”

Verified client, Bedfordshire

“No squeaks at all a year on, which was the whole reason we replaced the old one.”

Woburn questions

Do you work in hardwood or softwood?

Both. Engineered hardwood is the default where movement or exposure is a concern, and slow-grown softwood is often the better value choice for painted work in sheltered positions. We will tell you which we would specify and why.

Is the timber certified?

All our stock is FSC certified and chain-of-custody documentation is supplied with the order, which most main contractors and specifiers now require for their records.

What guarantee do you provide?

Ten years on workmanship, covering manufacture and the factory-applied finish. Where we install, the installation is covered too. It is issued in writing with the handover paperwork.

Can you work on a listed building?

Yes, and a significant share of our work is listed or conservation area. We can supply drawings and section details to support a listed building consent or planning application, though the consent itself remains the owner's responsibility.

Will the finish need maintaining?

A factory-applied microporous finish typically needs inspection every three to five years, sooner on exposed coastal elevations. Maintaining it is far cheaper than letting a coating fail and the timber take up water.
